Lyrics:

Stray dogs in the airport bark
Tail curled up like a question mark
And all the people scatter
Rats in the gutter scare Sarala
Ta ta le le
Ta ta le le

Sarala holds her daddy’s hand
Sarala meets her daddy’s land
Sarala, Sarala

Ricksha walla begs the question
Are all these red lights just suggestions
Oh, it’s gonna be OK
They know dead men can’t pay, Sarala
Ta ta le le
Ta ta le le

Sarala holds her daddy’s hand
Sarala meets her daddy’s land
Sarala, Sarala

Jesus found your grandfather there
I heard him say these cows aren’t sacred
They’re just in the way
And he was beat down
On this street you’re walking now
North Carolina will never be the same
For the girl with her grandmother’s name
Ta ta le le
Ta ta le le

Sarala holds her daddy’s hand
Sarala meets her daddy’s land
Sarala, Sarala, Sarala

  1. Chris Hubbs says:

Sarala Kasbe lives in North Carolina with her brother, mom, and dad. Her father grew up in India as a Dalit. She had no memory of India, so as their whole family joined us for the trip to India, it was very significant for her. She is a very sweet girl, 11 years old at the time, and Cliff and I had been talking about what a perfect name she had for a song. As we learned more about the family history, like how her grandfather was tortured and beaten and almost burned alive for his outspoken faith in Christ, the song took it’s final shape.

Rickshaws are driven by wallas, men and young boys who pedal the bicycle-based carts through the streets.

This Sarala sounds really special. I love the song and am happy to hear about this amazing girl.
