He realizes that it will take more than his love for his friends and for others to change things the way he wants to, he needs God's help. "And the hands I’ve seen raised to the sky (are) not waving but drowning all this time"...This line refers to the poem "Not Waving But Drowing", by the American poet Stevie Smith. Read the poem here. "Death's on a long leash stealing my friends to the night"...like it says in the previous line, although Satan's fate is sealed, he is still at work on a "long leash". The "friends to the night" quote is said to be inspired by Dylan Thomas' poem, "Do Not Go Gentle into that Dark Night". To read this poem, click here. "So I'm working tearing back the roof"...this line refers to the friends who tore through a roof to get their sick friend to Jesus in Mark 2. "I know you're Simon standing there"...Just like Simon of Cyrene, the man who carried Jesus' cross the rest of the way when Jesus was to weak to carry it (Matthew 27:32), Jesus is here to help us bear our burdens when they become too much for us to handle. "We've got to touch your robe/So swing your robe down low"...probably refers to the story in Luke 8 about the woman with the blood issue who was healed by touching Jesus' robe and believing that He would heal her.
