Only Hope

Written by: Charles Wesley (lyrics), Randall Goodgame (lyrics & music)

Appears on: Back Home, Chronicles

Lyrics:

Depth of mercy can there be
Mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God, your wrath forbear
Me the chief of sinners, spare?

It’s my only hope
You’re my only hope
It’s my only hope of heaven
At the cross forgiven

I have long withstood your grace
Long provoked you to your face
Would not hearken to your calls
Grieved you by a thousand falls

There for me the Savior stands
Shows his wounds and spreads his hands
Face to face before the Son
And like Isaiah I’m undone

Depth of mercy, vast and free
So much deeper than the sea
God of love, you heard my cry
Now into your open arms I fly

One Response to Only Hope

  1. Chris Hubbs says:

    From the Author:

“Wesley’s hymn “Depth of Mercy” is so powerful and raw. Some of the verses are so in-your-face honest that they are difficult to hear and even more difficult to sing. The first two verses of “Only Hope” come straight from that hymn. The rest of the song originates from me wrestling with the truth that, yes, there is mercy enough for even me. There’s mercy enough for all of us. The hard part is realizing the depth of our need. It’s not simply our only hope of Heaven, it’s our only hope of joy and life on earth.”
