Randy Holsapple on the Next Caedmon’s Record? Check.

Monday, October 19th, 2009

So I was nerding out this weekend with metadata about Caedmon’s Call, specifically when Randy was in the band, and because helping Bryan run this place for a few years has gotten me contacts, I just said, “Forget it … I’ll just email Randy.” So I did. For the record, here’s what he wrote about being in the band:

Before the band, Cliff, Danielle and I played a church service together on Wednesday nights. Cliff and Danielle were in high school. Danielle was only 14 years old. We were playing together the night the US started bombing Iraq the first time – 1991. Shortly after, Cliff, Danielle and Carrie Harris, performed a song in church one Sunday morning. I went up to Cliff afterward and told him that I would love to play with them sometime. That was around 1992-93. I was around when the band did their for the first cassette release, but I only played a small Melodica part as a joke.

After Carrie left the group, they started recording My Calm//Your Storm. Cliff asked me to play Hammond on the title track and I ended up playing on a few other tracks. I started playing shows with them as a hired player. I was older, married and had a job so I was only able to travel on weekends. As the band became more popular, they were playing more frequent. I took time off of work to go to Atlanta to record Caedmon’s Call and in early 1997, I got fired from my job for missing too much work.

The band was about to start a tour and Cliff told me to join them. I was “official” at this point. I continued to play through the first half of the “40 Acres” tour and left around the end of May 1999. Hope that helps.

Anyway, that’s pretty rock and roll for a folk band. And anyway, knowing that there’s this mysterious new record coming out next year, I asked, “Are you playing on the next record?” His response:

Yes I am.

-Randy

Color me giddy.

A Return to the Rumor Mill

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Remember the good old days when this site was a rumor mill? Yeah, we do, too.

So here’s a rumor you might be interested in: five intrepid musicians have been spotted at a ranch in Texas: Cliff and Danielle Young, Derek Webb, Todd Bragg, and Garett Buell. They were seen unloading foodstuffs and a kick drum. Could there be another record left in Caedmon’s Call? The world may never know.

When Caedmon’s Call Went To Ecuador

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Hey everyone, Bryan here. Back in April of 2004 I had the pleasure of traveling to Ecuador with Caedmon’s Call on a Compassion International sponsored trip. The band was in the process of making the Share The Well CD, and as a result of that trip, songs like “VolcanoLand”, “Did Not Catch Her Name”, and “Roses” were crafted.

I kept an abbreviated journal with me during the trip, and I just recently put the entries up on my blog. If you’d like a peek into what its like to travel overseas with the band, or just want to see some of the pictures from the trip, click on over and check it out.

Relax, No One Is Leaving Caedmon’s Call

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

So, Rick Starr thought that Josh had left the band and that Randy Holsapple was back with them. Nope. Per Christie [who would know]:

Since the band is doing just a few select shows this fall, it has worked out best for Josh to do other things.

This isn’t anything new, really; I saw Randy play a show with the band in 2006. And we know that Josh has been busy … with what, we’re not at liberty to say. ;)

Rest assured, the only person at risk of being thrown out of the band is Bryan for forgetting cc.net as one of his tribes. What, you didn’t think he was in the band? He totally is.

Expect Long Shows

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Andrew hinted at it today:

Time for photos of tour rehearsal! The bus will roll tonight and we’ll have a few more hours of running through tunes before we have to break stuff down and get it loaded up.

These first few shows will be LONG. Just so you know. We’re having trouble cutting songs, so we’re just not going to for a while. I hope that’s ok.

Cliff and I were talking earlier, and he told me that the band started with 32 [!] songs on the list, and trimmed it down to 24 [!!!]. That’s gonna be great. Given that there’ll be eight people on stage, four of whom have been known to babble on and on on-stage [Cliff, Derek, Andrew, and Josh], well … that show might go three or four hours.

Bring provisions, people. Trail mix, Gatorade, asthma inhalers, and those foam seat cushions you get at high school football games. It’s gonna be long, but awesome.

Trouble
Words and Music by Derek Webb. c 2007 Derek Webb Music (admin. by Music Services) all rights reserved. ASCAP

you say i’ve got trouble
i’ve got trouble all over me
i’ve got trouble since the day i was born

and it’s not just a struggle
it’s the blood running through my veins
it’s all the clothes i’ve ever worn

and when i’m with you i feel so overdressed

the trouble is i’m not above or beyond anything
so i know you must be good for me
as far as you can and as bad as i am
i know you must be good for me

i’m a terrible lover
i never love you the way i should
and every single reason’s wrong

oh my sister, my brothers
we’ve got history on our heels
and we’re running like we broke the law

with friends like these tell me, who needs the police

we’re making noise in the temple
but we’re skimming off the top
and we don’t want you to suffer
but you don’t want to stop
because you know that it’s the only way
