Raising Up the Dead

Did you miss us? Our comments on the last post indicate that you did.

If you missed the emails from the band, Caedmon’s Call is releasing a new album later this year, titled Raising Up the Dead. We’re not sure what Cliff will call this one when you ask: “the brown one” or “the mustard yellow one”? Time will tell, we guess.

As we indicated back last August, this is a slightly smaller Caedmon’s Call than the previous iteration. Andy O publicly stated back then that he wouldn’t be a part of it, and while we here at [caedmonscall.net] will miss him, it’s not like he’s not making music anymore. Same with Josh Moore. But our reports were a bit off with regards to the bass support: rumors of Jeff Miller’s musical demise are greatly exaggerated. Our favorite bassist/programmer even wrote a song for Raising Up the Dead. We know this because Derek told us so, although we think he said that on the Twitters, too, so that’s probably not much of a scoop anymore.

We can tell you that we really like it. If you’re wanting to hear it, you can get two of the songs up on NoiseTrade: “Sometimes a Beggar” [the aforementioned Miller-penned tune] and “She”. We would argue that these are pretty representative of the sound of the album, so if you’ve been wondering what a 2010-era Caedmon’s Call record would sound like, well, get to listening.

Pre-sales for Raising Up the Dead start on August 2. We would like to thank the band for honoring the anniversary of our rumor about the band recording together again with the pre-sale date. They love us like that.

Love Caedmon’s but a little apprehensive. I really liked what they guys did with Overdressed and frankly everything they have ever done before. Please don’t think I am criticizing the band. Just need to hear more.

I have to say the jury is out on this one for me as well. Caedmon’s Call is my #1 fav band and I have enjoyed everything they have put out from amazing to not quite as amazing. I have to admit the preview has grown on me with some time and I can definitely hear the acoustic roots and undertones in the songs, but it still hasn’t struck me or gotten me as excited as I have been for CC albums in the past. Oh I’ll still be getting it to be sure, but I think I share your apprehension, Tim.

Any other readers out there have thoughts on the preview? Not downing it, but honestly just want to know impressions.

Yeah, I’m with y’all on this. Honestly, the Beggar song feels like a solo Derek song. I dig his stuff (She Must… was hugely influential and I consider it one of my favorite CDs), but I think he’s sounding a bit overstretched lately. Stockholm was interesting SOUNDING, but I found it relatively shallow and disappointing (not to mention controversy-mongering). And the track with Danielle just didn’t do much for me. Seems middle of the road. With Derek producing and probably writing the majority of it, I’m only as excited as I would be to hear another solo record. I was disappointed to hear that Osenga left. He brought a LOT to the band. We’ll see. I’m with you on buying it, too. I’ll get it. Just not expecting to be blown away.

I can’t wait. I’m VERY excited. but I will admit to being nervous with EACH and every one of their releases. For me, the bar was set so high with My Calm//Your Storm, that I always have to warm up to the newest release. Some warm up faster (Overdressed, JDWC, 40Acres), than others (STW which now has some of my favorites that I play guitar with all the time, ITCoA which I still haven’t completely embraced).

I’m looking forward to seeing where this one lands but am excited about what Randall Goodgame told me in my living room a few months back. He said it was the first album with all songs written entirely by the members of the band (cliff & danielle young, derek webb, jeff miller), and not an outside influence (like Andrew Osenga , Goodgame, etc.).
I tried (unsuccessfully) to argue that the first album MC//YS (written by Aaron Tate and Derek Webb ) counts because even though he never performed with the band, I always considered Tate part and parcel to CC and he and Derek contributed very heavily to those first few (Great) albums.
Hurry up Monday and get here!

Please help me out: Who is “She” in the new song?

I always love Danielle’s stuff but this song confuses me. I usually am in tune with Caedmon’s scripture references and allegories but this one alludes me. Thanks!

I have to say, after hearing the whole album, I like “Raising up the Dead” every bit as much as Overdressed. To contradict (or change position on) my previous comment, this was so the right direction and album for Caedmon’s. They’ve always seemed a bit adrift. This album and Overdressed make it feel like they’re walking on solid ground again. I say that as someone who was deeply and forever impacted by “My Calm/Your Storm” but found the rest of the output increasingly less focused (although I immediately liked “Share the Well”). So, anyway, I’m just following-up on my previous criticism. Two thumbs up from me and mine. My thumbs, that is.

This should be known as the Danielle album. She sings lead almost every track. My preference has always been Derek/Andrew singing. I miss the strong Reformed lyrics of the 40 acres days. This one gets a big “meh” from me.

  9. Kris says:

Would love to know what the words to “She” are about.

  10. Tony from Pandora says:

I’m pretty sure it’s about the girl on the cover of ‘Intimate Portrait’…

    …totally joking, of course…
