Buzzplant on SMASGF
By Geof F. Morris | December 17, 2002
For those of you not on the Buzzplant Promotions mailing list, we’ve archived a copy of the email message sent out by Derek Webb promoting his March 25th release, She Must and Shall Go Free.
Greetings to all-
I sincerely hope that everyone is having a joyful Christmas season. I wanted to take a moment to give everyone an update on a few exciting things. For starters, my wife Sandra and I are coming up on our 2nd wedding anniversary. For those of you who are not married, I highly recommend it. Just be sure and buy a helmet.
Also, we have a new addition to our family (breathe Mom, it’s not what you’re thinking…). We now have a four month old border collie puppy named Levi. I’m surethis is what all the proud new dog owners say, but I think this is the smartest dog alive. For example, he just finished preparing our 2002 federal tax returns (but we’re having a bit of a disagreement, as he thinks I should incorporate…). Seriously, he’s a total blast. Something else that I highly recommend.
For those who haven’t heard yet, I’ve just finished my first solo record, which is called She Must and Shall Go Free. The title is taken from a hymn written by William Gadsby (circa 18th century). His hymn is about the demands of the Gospel on the Church, that because of Jesus she must and shall go free”. Now having been in a ‘Christian’ band for over 10 years, seeing what goes on day in and day out in our churches and industry, something in me resonated with these words. That is what I have devoted this record to; preaching the true gospel of freedom to the church, not only the church but also to my own heart. The truth is that our condition is much worse that we even realize. But this is the hope we have, that even in our wretchedness we are lovely because of Jesus. We, as His bride, are adorned in His righteousness and therefore loved as daughters and sons. This is indeed good news!
I am so looking forward to getting out this next year and really talking about the gospel. As part of my efforts to do so, you might hear rumors that i’m playing in your friend’s living room (or something crazy like that…). Well those rumors will probably be true. I plan on playing as many small shows as I can to allow for as much discussion as possible. And I mean small… 75 people in a living room; no PA system, no lights. Just just me, a guitar, and you.
So please keep an eye out. And keep and eye out for She Must and Shall Go Free, which is set to release on March 25 in 2003. Well thanks for allowing me to catch up. Maybe some of you can catch up with me as well over this next year. Take care & God bless-
Derek Webb
